love the idea of the word map!! definitely been wanting to improve my diction lately as well, thank you for writing this 🫶🏼 being well-spoken is soooo in for 2025
wait this is so good i have words i always read and assume the meaning off based on the context but always discover it means the opposite of what i thought. although ive started collecting new words i’ve learnt (in korean as well as english) i want to start doing this actively
Also, for the godless among us who read things on desktop, I recommend Google Dictionary as a Chrome extension. You can just highlight a word and get the definition there
I absolutely loved this! It's especially convenient when you speak two languages and it feels like your vocabulary is deteriorating in both. And it sounds like fun!
that you remain fluent in two natural languages satisfies my invented criterion for "intellectual", invented by recognising my own failure to have such fluency, despite years & years of flailing away And squandering my most promising opportunity at 5 to 7 years of age exposed to bilingual (Portuguese English) rote learning in Brazil. I have since read of studies suggesting evidence that 1. chronological age offers brief windows for such opportunities or 2.various circumstances (a bilingual family or multi-tribal Indigenous circumstance for two,but there are others)offer promise for acquiring proficient bilingualism.
3. for later life acquisition I found some promise in voluntary immersion, wandering long enough through Latin America while reading Spanish newspapers, primary school texts (again) needing clues from road signs & shop names to navigate wanderspace and struggling at rudimentary communication with Spanish only local speakers - that sort of immersion for 2 or 3 months would provide me with a functional travel Spanish which would disappear shortly upon re-immersion in some prorochial English language environment, just as my promising start with acquiring Portuguese at age 5 to 7 went away once back in Maryland, USA in 1951...
4. so now I have exposed a sad deficiency of Intellect and dedication realised to late in life (at 82) to overcome [ but it's still fun to write about this piddly Lonesome Loser shit & maybe, if improbably, offer clues of use to much younger readers, Thank You ]
Recently picked up reading books again and I was able to recognize one of the words u used — “inveigle”!! That type of recognition feels like a dopamine hit. Thank u for the idea of a word map + flash cards combo!!
omg yes! i need to do this for 2025. do you by any chance remember what list you found with the vocabulary words you used? every one i've found has words like "a" and "very", which don't really have a definition in this context.
Words are alot of fun. One thing ive noticed is my vocabulary naturally expands the more i read(books). This occurs whether or not i actively encourage it(by looking up word definitions or etymology). I think it has more to do with how my brain works than learning new words. Bc new words will just come to mind at the right time. And i really love etymology. Thats where the real fun is, finding out where a mundane word comes from, has changed over time, or birthed other, often far spread words.
Im not much for studying flashcards, but i like the map idea. I think i do that in my head somewhat, put words in their place, so to speak.
I also want to note that many people around you may be resistant to attempts to expand their vocabulary, so tread lightly in that regard..

Exactly this!!! So many times I look up a definition of a word and realize I had it completely wrong
What do you call a person who likes collecting words?
Brilliant idea to make it bilingual too, two birds and one stone!
Rt, that's happens to me every time, and I try to keep the meaning about that new word, and it's totally not working.
Fun idea, I want to try this!
