wait this is so good i have words i always read and assume the meaning off based on the context but always discover it means the opposite of what i thought. although ive started collecting new words i’ve learnt (in korean as well as english) i want to start doing this actively

Exactly this!!! So many times I look up a definition of a word and realize I had it completely wrong

What do you call a person who likes collecting words?

I have a vocab system I use. Not a new system, but a traditional and academic process the grade teachers in public school pounded in my head when I was in third grade. The words I Collect in my reading are written down on loose-leaf paper.

I return to them later. Could be in the morning, afternoon, or evening. That is a matter of the schedule. In my case, when rise in the morning, I revisit my list. I take five words, write them down at least 10 times, and then craft several sentences from different angles. If the words give me difficulties, for lack of hearing them used, or zero word association, I find sentences and write them down. In addition, in the example sentences, I stretch, pull, twist, and fold the words into a cakepan like recycling the trash in the market and cultural production that create trends and word association.

After the words, I moth into my morning page, and if any of the words from my vocab list relate to the subject of the journal, I will thread the quilt into another angle relevant to butterflies, electrifying word association.

In addition, I will release myself from two hours of bondage of my Laz-boy and prepare myself for arm, leg, leg head, and torso stretching, cycling, and walking down an arch treeline pathway to the Freedom Park lake and listening to the music of birds, squirrels, water fountains shoots.

Final thought, studying word association doesn't only breed creative imagery and narrative eloquence but enhances social skills as consistent walking creates a healthy cardiovascular system.

Fun idea, I want to try this!

Also, for the godless among us who read things on desktop, I recommend Google Dictionary as a Chrome extension. You can just highlight a word and get the definition there

I absolutely loved this! It's especially convenient when you speak two languages and it feels like your vocabulary is deteriorating in both. And it sounds like fun!

That makes sense!

that you remain fluent in two natural languages satisfies my invented criterion for "intellectual", invented by recognising my own failure to have such fluency, despite years & years of flailing away And squandering my most promising opportunity at 5 to 7 years of age exposed to bilingual (Portuguese English) rote learning in Brazil. I have since read of studies suggesting evidence that 1. chronological age offers brief windows for such opportunities or 2.various circumstances (a bilingual family or multi-tribal Indigenous circumstance for two,but there are others)offer promise for acquiring proficient bilingualism.

3. for later life acquisition I found some promise in voluntary immersion, wandering long enough through Latin America while reading Spanish newspapers, primary school texts (again) needing clues from road signs & shop names to navigate wanderspace and struggling at rudimentary communication with Spanish only local speakers - that sort of immersion for 2 or 3 months would provide me with a functional travel Spanish which would disappear shortly upon re-immersion in some prorochial English language environment, just as my promising start with acquiring Portuguese at age 5 to 7 went away once back in Maryland, USA in 1951...

4. so now I have exposed a sad deficiency of Intellect and dedication realised to late in life (at 82) to overcome [ but it's still fun to write about this piddly Lonesome Loser shit & maybe, if improbably, offer clues of use to much younger readers, Thank You ]

omg yes! i need to do this for 2025. do you by any chance remember what list you found with the vocabulary words you used? every one i've found has words like "a" and "very", which don't really have a definition in this context.
